Four xiangqi sets on a bamboo board

Some time ago, I bought a bamboo board which had the lines for go on one side, and for xiangqi on the other.

The 'go side' has already been used for Alea Evangelii, but, clearly, the 'xiangqi side' had to be used as well!

Over time, I collected four different xiangqi sets that, in my opinion, work well on the bamboo board. First one is a wooden set which I got from Masters Traditional Games. Set comes in a nice box, and consists of good quality wooden discs.

Second set I got off eBay, and is made of honey onyx.

The third set is made of acrylic, and I got it from Amazon; again, the set comes in a nice box

And then the final of the four sets, also off eBay, made from porcelain, and coming in a 'wire cage box'.

Four nice additions to my collection of xiangqi sets, and I have no doubt there will be more sets in the future that fit well on the bamboo board.

ChessPlus set

Recently, I stumbled across a chess variant called ChessPlus, and couldn't resist buying myself a copy. The game comes in a sturdy cardboard box ...

... and the board is a simple fold-out cardboard one.

At first glance, the game doesn't appear to be different from FIDE chess. Same 8 x 8 board size, same types of pieces, which all have the same moves.

So what then makes the game different? If you look at the pieces in more detail, you notice that, apart from the king, they have a front and back side. And the backside of all pieces is identical. And that goes right at the heart of what ChessPlus is ....

In ChessPlus, pieces can combine!

So a player can move one if its pieces to a square already occupied by another of its pieces, and that move combines the two pieces. The new combination piece moves as one piece, with the powers of both original pieces. It can split apart again when one of the two original pieces moves away on its own. Combine a pawn with a queen, and getting that pawn to promotion all of a sudden becomes a lot easier!

Downside of combining pieces is that when a combination piece is captured, both original pieces are captured ....

'Cold War' set

I saw this 'cold war' chess set on eBay, for very little. It didn't come with a board, but I felt it would fit well on the board that came with my pseudo-italfama set.

The pieces are made of wood, and painted in the colours and symbols of the Soviet Union and the United States.

All I could find on the internet on this set suggests it may date from the 1950s, which would make sense from a 'cold war' perspective.

If anyone reading this knows a bit more about its history, please let me know!

Black wooden inlaid xiangqi board + white plastic pieces

This xiangqi set is not one that belongs together. I saw a nice board on eBay, looking for a set of pieces, and then a set of pieces, looking for a board ...

The board is made of wood, inlaid with something (not sure what) ...

... and the pieces are made of sturdy plastic, a bit larger and heavier than other plastic sets in my collection.

They look fine together, don't they?

Three Lord of the Rings sets

Some time ago, I created a board for a Lord of the Rings set. At that point in time, I wasn't aware that an official Lord of Rings chess set existed, issued by New Line Cinema. Or, to be more precise, three sets, each linked to one of the movies in the trilogy. You surely see where this is going .... eBay was my friend, once again! All three sets have the usual cardboard boards, and nicely sculpted plastic pieces.

First set is linked to "The Fellowship of the Ring"

The 'bronze' (black) side has various orks and trolls as the minor pieces, and has a ring wraith as the queen and Saruman as the king.

The 'pewter' (white) side has Sam as pawns, Boromir, Aragorn and Frodo as rook, knight and bishop, respectively, and Galadriel and Gandalf as the royal pieces.

Set number two is associated with "The Two Towers".

The 'chinese lacquer' (black) side again has orks and warg riders as the minor pieces, Wormtongue as queen, and Saruman again as king.

The 'antique ivory' (white) side has almost the same pieces as the 'Fellowship set', except for the rook: Treebeard takes that place on the board.

The third and final set represents "The Return of the King".

The 'antique bronze' (black) side again has orks as pawns, Wormtongue is now the rook, a Warg Rider the knight, and Gollum the bishop. The queen is in the form of a Ring Wraith, and the tower of Barad-Dur is the king.

The 'ancient bone' (white) side has once again Sam as pawns, Legolas and Gimli as the two rooks, Merry and Pippin as the two knights, Frodo and Gandalf as the two bishops, and, quite fittingly, Arwen and Aragorn as the royal couple.

Nice set of sets!

Xiangqi table

A neat xiangqi set, consisting of a wooden mini-table, with the (plastic) pieces stored in two small drawers.

Note that the plastic pieces consist of two discs: a white disc bearing the Chinese characters on top of a semi-translucent disc. Makes them stand out a bit more compared to the default plastic pieces.

All in all, a nice set, well worth what I paid for it on eBay.

Don Quixote set

I'd seen this Don Quixote set on eBay a few times already, but always with starting bids or buy-it-now prices that I really couldn't justify. Until one listing didn't specify it was a Don Quixote set ... I think the seller wasn't aware what they were selling, but that served me well.

The box containing the pieces didn't come with a board, and I felt the set would fit very nicely on the resin board resembling leather that I got quite a while ago and also used for my Arthurian set.

No brownie points for guessing the identity of the major pieces! Obviously, Don Quixote is the king, Dulcinea the queen, Sancho Panza the bishop and Rocinante the knight. Rooks are wind mills, and the vanes can actually turn!
